A Rutgers University student was sexually assaulted by an unknown man who followed her as she walked to her off-campus apartment early Sunday, according to authorities.

According to a report by NBC10, the incident occurred over what was move-in weekend for students returning to the New Brunswick campus for the fall semester, which starts Tuesday.

The female, whose age has not been reported, said she was walking alone to her off-campus apartment near Richardson and Wyckoff streets in New Brunswick at about 2:45 a.m. when a man began walking behind her and attempted to engage her in conversation. Authorities said he then followed her into her backyard and sexually assaulted her before fleeing the scene.

The victim was taken to a nearby hospital where she was treated and released. Police are still searching for the suspect.
