With starting pitchers taking most of the headlines, it's worth mentioning that relief pitching is certainly a priority for the Phillies, as they patiently wait for seven hurlers to mend on their injury list. According to MLB.com's Jeffrey Flanigan, one-time homegrown lefty specialist Jake Diekman could be on his way back to Philadelphia. The Phils reportedly scouted the flame-thrower last week, and also had a scout on hand Friday night.

The Phillies have 10, count em, 10 players on the injured list — seven of them pitchers.
The team acquired Drew Smyly to help reinforce both the rotation and the bullpen Friday, but there will likely be some more moves made to improve the staff, and possibly their outfield, before the July 31 trade deadline.

Last night, Jay Bruce — you know, the left-handed trade acquisition with 25 home runs — left Tuesday's win with an oblique injury. Most of the time, an injury like that requires time on the injured list.

The Phillies need for a starting pitcher is pretty desperate. Not only do they not have a fifth starter to begin with, but Jake Arrieta is pitching through bone spurs and is, at best, going at 85 percent. The fact that Stroman is only 28 and is not a rental player strengthens the case for Philly to make the move. He has a 3.25 ERA this season in 110.2 innings pitched.

The Phillies have had the second worst bullpen in all of baseball since June 1, with a putrid 6.67 ERA. Most of the blame for that goes to, you know, the eight pitchers currently on the team who are unable to get the job done.
But it is hard to ignore the fact that six of the Phillies seven current players on the injured list are bullpen arms.
