National Film Registry adds 'Desperately Seeking Susan,' directed by Abington-native Susan Seidelman

The Library of Congress announced 25 new selections for preservation in the National Film Registry on Wednesday, including 'Desperately Seeking Susan.' The 1985 Madonna-starring comedy was directed by Susan Seidelman, an Abington native who attended Drexel University before moving to New York City.

Person stabbed inside 69th Street SEPTA station, police say

A person was stabbed at the 69th Street Transportation Center on Tuesday morning, Southeastern Pennsylvania Transportation Authority officials said. SEPTA released a photo of the suspected attacker and is asking for the public's help in identifying the suspect.

In Philly, Google says we searched for 'The Last of Us,' air quality reports and batting cages

Google has released its annual Year in Search, which compiles the most-queried people, events and pop culture. Philadelphia's most-searched television shows in 2023 included 'The Last of Us' and 'The Golden Bachelor.' Philadelphians also were interested in the films 'Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3' and 'Creed III'; the touring musicians Taylor Swift, Beyoncé, Drake, SZA and the Jonas Brothers; local air quality and, surprisingly, batting cages.

Philadelphia birders can take part in the National Audubon Society's annual Christmas Bird Count on Dec. 16 at the Pennypack Environmental Center. In its 124th year, the count is the longest-running community science bird project in America.

3 Philly fire stations closed since 2009 to reopen with FEMA funding delivered during Biden visit

President Joe Biden visited Philadelphia on Monday, Dec. 11 to formally announce a $22.4 million FEMA grant that will allow three city fire stations to reopen. The shuttered stations are Engine 6, Ladder 11 and Ladder 1, which would've responded to the 2022 Fairmount fire that killed 12 people. The stations closed in 2009.

John Dougherty, the longtime business manager of the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers Local 98, was found TK Tuesday on federal embezzlement charges. 'Johnny Doc' and others were accused of stealing more than $600,000 from the union.
