Baby boy dies after mother allegedly throws him from Lehigh bridge

1-year-old allegedly thrown from bridge 52 feet above banks of Lehigh River

A baby boy allegedly thrown by his mother from Allentown's Hamilton Street Bridge last weekend died at the Lehigh Valley Hospital, Cedar Crest on Saturday morning, NBC 10 reports.

According to investigators, witnesses say 1-year-old Zymeir Perry was thrown by her mother, 19-year-old Johnesha Perry, who removed her child from a stroller midway across the bridge and threw him into the water below. Officials say she then climbed over the railing and jumped in after him.

When police arrived minutes later, the mother was reportedly found conscious on the riverbank. Officers Joseph Iannetta and John Leonard located the child about 700 yards downstream, recovered him and successfully revived him using CPR before rushing him to the hospital.

Perry was rushed to the same hospital with minor injuries and guarded by Lehigh County Sheriffs.

The young mother was charged with attempted homicide, aggravated assault and reckless endangerment. Officials have not yet announced whether those charges will be upgraded after the baby's death.
