Express E-ZPass lanes returning ahead of schedule on Pa. Turnpike

Traffic along the Pennsylvania Turnpike in the Philadelphia region will move a bit more smoothly this week as express lanes reopen to motorists.

On Thursday, the Pennsylvania Turnpike Commission announced both directions of Express E-ZPass lanes at the Mid-County Interchange in Montgomery County will be operational in time for the Friday morning rush hour. The tolls were expected to be out of action until April 10, but road crews completed the work ahead of schedule.

The northbound lanes opened Thursday morning and southbound lanes will return Friday at 5 a.m.

Crews installed upgraded electronic tolling equipment over the roadway as the first phase of a three-part improvement project.

The next phases include repairing the roadway on I-476 and the eastbound and westbound ramps to I-276. The project is scheduled to be completed in September 2018.

The timetable for the next phase of construction has not been determined.
