Feast of the 7 Pickles returns to Fishtown this month with twists on Philly foods

Fishtown Pickle Project's Feast of the 7 Fishes returns for its third year Dec. 19. With Kensington's Martha as the venue, this year's menu is inspired by Philly favorites like cheesesteaks, soft pretzels, Tastykakes and scrapple. There will be three seatings at 5, 7 and 9 p.m. with 50 spots available per time slot. Tickets cost $95 apiece.

Fishtown food trucks can stay for now after City Council vote on bill to ban them is delayed

A move in Philadelphia City Council to ban food trucks from Girard and Frankford avenues in Fishtown was not voted on Thursday. The fate of the proposed ordinance, which has sparked controversy in the neighborhood, is in limbo as council approaches the end of its session on Dec. 14.

Franklin Institute permanently closes Tuttleman IMAX theater

The Franklin Institute's Tuttleman IMAX theater is now permanently closed after it was shut down in March 2020 during the COVID-19 pandemic. The museum said the domed theater is no longer a viable business model. The Franklin Institute instead plans to invest in six new exhibits, including the Wondrous Space exhibit that opened earlier this month. The Tuttleman opened in 1990.

Weight-loss drug Wegovy could help treat alcohol addiction, researchers say

Wegovy and Ozempic, drugs commonly used for weight loss, may be used to treat alcohol addiction, researchers say. Studies on semaglutide, the ingredient in both drugs, are examining whether people who take the medication can reduce alcohol consumption and cravings to drink. One newly published study offers the first evidence that GLP-1 agonists can help people manage alcohol addiction.

Driver sentenced up to 24 years in prison for fatal hit-and-run at Bucks County McDonald's

A New Jersey man who ran his truck over another man at a McDonald's in Bucks County in February was sentenced to 12-24 years in prison on Wednesday. Daniel Dietrich, 46, of Palmyra, struck and killed 47-year-old Jason Smith, of Levittown, during a road-rage encounter in Bristol Township on Feb. 5. Dietrich pleaded guilty to charges of voluntary manslaughter and related offenses.

Certain personality traits – like being an extrovert – may lower risk for dementia

Personality traits like extraversion and conscientiousness may lower the risk of developing dementia, according to new research on the relationship between behavior and cognitive decline. The new study found people with positive traits were more protected from impairment; those with negative characteristics like neuroticism were at greater risk.

On the latest episode of the 'New Heights' podcast, Rob McElhenney revealed that Kaitlin Olson, his wife and 'It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia" co-star, was outbidding him in the charity auction for the Princess Diana Eagles jacket signed by Kylie Kelce. The couple told Jason and Travis Kelce they ultimately agreed to jointly bid $100,000 for the jacket, which benefits the Eagles Autism Foundation.

Apartments, restaurant proposed at site of former Oak Lane Diner in North Philly

The site of the former Oak Lane Diner in North Philadelphia could be redeveloped as an apartment building with a new restaurant and office space. The proposal calls for a seven-story mixed-use building at the corner of North Broad Street and 66th Avenue, with 65 residential units for seniors (including 46 affordable units with income restrictions). The Oak Lane Diner permanently closed after a fire in 2015.

Grandmother of Lower Merion family among hostages released by Hamas

Hamas released 12 hostages Tuesday, including 84-year-old Deitza Heiman, as part of the cease-fire in Gaza. Heiman, who has family in Lower Merion Township, was taken hostage less than two miles from the border with Gaza in southern Israel during the Hamas terrorist attacks on Oct. 7. As part of Tuesday's hostage deal, Israel agreed to release 30 Palestinian prisoners.

New Pa. law requires consent for medical students to perform pelvic, rectal exams on unconscious patients

Pennsylvania medical facilities now must get written and verbal consent to perform pelvic, prostate and rectal exams on patients who are unconscious under anesthesia. The law, which was signed Monday, makes Pennsylvania one of at least 20 states to require informed consent for these exams, which historically have been done by medical students for training purposes even when they are not necessary for the patients.
