Broad Street Run moves to April in 2023, with more runners welcome

The Blue Cross Broad Street Run will be held Sunday, April 30, 2023, with a start time of 8 a.m. Registration for the Broad Street Run, the largest 10-mile race in the United States, will open on Feb. 1 and close on Feb. 15. This year's event will conclude at Lincoln Financial Field instead of the Navy Yard. With COVID-19 protocols relaxed, it will revert to 40,000 runners and allow spectators to cheer. No vaccine confirmations or masks will be required.

Memphis Taproom, the Olde Richmond pub once visited by Guy Fieri, to close

Memphis Taproom, a longtime restaurant and beer garden in the Olde Richmond section of Philadelphia's River Wards, will close at the end of January. The gastropub, which once was featured on Guy Fieri's "Diners, Drive-Ins and Dives," will be sold to people who plan to open another business at its location on Memphis and Cumberland streets. The owners cited the difficulties of maintaining an independent restaurant as the reason for the pending closure.

Philadelphia Eagles running back Miles Sanders said he FaceTimed with Buffalo Bills safety Damar Hamlin, who is recovering at the University of Cincinnati Medical Center after he went into cardiac arrest during the first quarter of "Monday Night Football." Sanders and Hamlin are close friends after the two Pittsburgh area natives formerly competed with one another on the field in high school.

'Stranger Things' star Noah Schnapp comes out as gay

Noah Schnapp, the 18-year-old actor who plays Will Byers on Netflix's hit series "Stranger Things," came out as gay in a video he shared Thursday on TikTok. Schnapp's character on the show was revealed to be gay during season four, which was released last summer. Schnapp is a freshman at the University of Pennsylvania and a native of New York. "I guess I’m more similar to Will than I thought," Schnapp captioned the TikTok.

Police report gives chilling details about killings of University of Idaho students, describes pursuit of Bryan Kohberger

In the killings of four University of Idaho students, authorities have released the police report, which provides more details about the crime and how Bryan Kohberger, the Pennsylvania man charged with the homicides, was linked to the crime scene in Moscow Idaho. Kohberger was in court on Thursday, Jan. 5, following his arrest at his parents' home in the Poconos and his extradition on Wednesday. Kohberger is a doctoral student in criminology at Washington State University, which is about 10 miles from the home were the four students were killed.

Missing dog, found during N.J. puppy mill bust, reunited with Tennessee family after 2 years apart

A pet bloodhound named Daisy, who went missing from her family in Tennessee two years ago, was found at a puppy mill in New Jersey in December and reunited with her family on New Year's Day thanks to the discovery of a microchip. Two women were charged with animal cruelty in connection with the puppy mill in Brick Township, where authorities found about 180 animals during a search of the property.

Pennsylvania Rep. Mark Rozzi, of Berks County, was elected as the the state's first independent Speaker of the House after switching his former Democratic party affiliation on Tuesday, Jan. 3. Democrats obtained a one-seat House majority in the November elections, with 102-101 edge over Republicans, but vacancies in three Democratic districts led to a battle over which party held the majority.

Man assaulted after chasing robber who stole his wallet at Jefferson Station, police say

Philadelphia police are searching for several suspects involved in an assault that occurred on SEPTA's Market-Frankford Line subway on Dec. 12. The incident happened after a robber stole the wallet of a 20-year-old man on the platform of Jefferson Station in Center City. The man chased the robber onto the train, where he was attacked by a group of men, investigators said. Authorities released surveillance video of the assault and are seeking help from the public to identify the suspects.
