Faulty HVAC system may have played a role in COVID-19 outbreak at Lower Merion elementary school

Lower Merion School District officials are investigating a COVID-19 outbreak among second-graders at Penn Valley Elementary School. Eight students and two parents — both of whom are fully vaccinated — tested positive for COVID-19. It's unclear whether the infections were caused by a COVID-19 variant, but the school district is focusing its attention on HVAC systems in its buildings.

Roku users may lose YouTube TV app due to Google contract dispute

Streaming platform Roku warned subscribers Monday that they may lose access to the YouTube TV app if a new contract cannot be finalized with Google. The company accused Google of predatory behavior in the ongoing negotiations. Roku had a similar dispute with HBO over the HBO Max app last year.

Pennsylvania residents can enter lotteries to buy 213 rare whiskey bottles

The Pennsylvania Liquor Control Board will hold five separate limited-release lotteries for rare whiskeys and bourbons. Entry is open to Pennsylvania consumers over 21 years old and licensees in the state. The whiskies include bottles from Pappy Van Winkle Family Reserve and Buffalo Trace distilleries.

Showboat Hotel to open massive arcade, sports bar, boxing ring in Atlantic City

Atlantic CIty's Showboat Hotel will open the Lucky Snake arcade, the largest in New Jersey, on May 15. Philadelphia developer Bart Blatstein said he hopes to make the former casino a non-gambling family entertainment destination. The space will include a sports bar and boxing ring, with later plans to add a concert venue and beer garden next door.

Amish teen was strangled, stabbed before burial in Lancaster County, coroner says

Human remains found buried in eastern Lancaster County this week have been positively identified as 18-year-old Linda Stoltzfoos, the Amish woman who went missing last June after attending a church youth group meeting. Justo Smoker, 35, has been charged in her killing.

Philly father who prompted Amber Alert earlier this month now charged with killing son's mother, grandmother

Byron McDonald, 27, is charged with homicide in the shooting of 50-year-old Tamara Aiken and 25-year-old Morgan Braxton. McDonald was arrested on April 12 following an Amber Alert issued by Pennsylvania State Police, who were searching for his three-year-old son. Braxton was the boy's mother and and Aiken was his grandmother.

One person killed in helicopter crash in Pennsylvania, state police say

One person was killed when a Robinson R44 helicopter crashed in Wyoming County, Pennsylvania on April 22, 2021. The aircraft had departed from Allentown Queen Municipal Airport around 8 p.m. before it was reported missing by the Federal Aviation Administration. The crash investigation is being led by the National Transportation Safety Board.

Ocean City will seek independent contractor amid probe of sexual misconduct in beach patrol

Ocean City officials will hire an independent contractor to handle day-to-day operations of the Ocean City Beach Patrol amid an ongoing investigation into allegations of sexual misconduct. The investigation with the Cape May County Prosecutor's Office began in response to an Instagram account that has published dozens of anonymous allegations of inappropriate behavior.

The Yorks Arts building is a project proposed in Philadelphia's West Kensington neighborhood that would include 127 apartments and artist industrial space. The proposed site for building is at 1901 York St., a few minutes away from the York-Dauphin Station of SEPTA's Market-Frankford Line.

Franklin Fountain in Old City will sell Fido Freezers — ice cream sandwiches for dogs — starting April 23 at 116 Market St. The treats use non-dairy coconut ice cream and gluten-free cookies suitable for canine consumption.
