Kenneth Frye, 25, was a private security contractor for Tabu Lounge and Sports Bar in Philadelphia's Gayborhood when he knocked 41-year-old Eric Pope unconscious on the street in April 2022. Pope went into a coma and died a week later. A Pennsylvania Superior Court panel has reinstated a third-degree murder charge against Frye that had been dismissed by a lower court.

Philadelphia's private, for-profit eviction system will soon cease operations amid struggles to maintain insurance and calls for reform of the decades-old enforcement approach. The city's Landlord-Tenant Office will no longer manage eviction notices and lockouts using for-profit subcontractors. Evictions will now be carried out by the Philadelphia Sheriff's Office. The push for change came after two women were shot by private contractors during evictions in the city last year.

A New Jersey man is facing federal charges for allegedly attempting to open the doors to an American Airlines plane mid-flight during a trip last month between Seattle and Dallas. Eric Gapco, 26, of Delanco, Burlington County, allegedly assaulted a flight attendant, propositioned a flight attendant for sex and became unruly. He was restrained by the crew and other passengers while the plane was diverted to Salt Lake City International Airport.

Two leaders of the former Penn State University fraternity where sophomore Timothy Piazza suffered deadly injuries from hazing have pleaded guilty to charges stemming from their actions during the 2017 pledging event at the chapter house in State College. Former Beta Theta Pi President Brendan Young, 28, and Vice President Daniel Casey, 27, each pleaded guilty to hazing and reckless endangerment charges.

The Philadelphia Phillies have agreed to a jersey patch sponsorship with health insurance company Independence Blue Cross. The team will start wearing the patches on their sleeves Wednesday night at home against the New York Yankees. With the deal, the Phillies are now the 22nd MLB team to get a jersey patch sponsor since MLB introduced uniform advertising in 2023.

Urban Artifact, a Cincinnati-based brewery, has filed a federal lawsuit against Pennsylvania claiming the state has discriminatory rules that restrict beer sales to consumers from out of state. The company's suit contends the Pennsylvania Liquor Control Board uses protectionist policies that favor in-state breweries and place unfair burdens on beer makers that want to sell directly to consumers in other states.

Former New Jersey state trooper Nicholas Hogan, 28, pleaded guilty to striking a woman who was handcuffed in the back of a squad car during a stop in Upper Deerfield, Cumberland County in September 2022. Hogan leaned into the car and punched the woman with a flashlight in his hand after she spit in his direction, investigators said.

City Councilmember Jamie Gauthier is seeking ideas from nonprofits to find a new use for the former Greensgrow urban farm on Baltimore Avenue in West Philadelphia. The property shuttered in 2022 when the nonprofit ceased operations at its locations in Kensington and West Philly, leaving questions about the future of both properties.
