This suspect is wanted for an abduction after taking a car with a baby in the backseat in South Philadelphia on Thursday, Feb. 2, 2017, according to police.

Philadelphia police are searching for a suspect in the abduction Thursday afternoon of a baby girl in South Philadelphia.

The one-year-old girl was in a car seat in the backseat of a 2014 Toyota RAV4 left running at 8th and McKean streets while her mother ran into the McKean Laundromat to get her daughter a toy at about 5:35 p.m., police said.

As the 30-year-old mother came out of the laundromat, she saw a black man get in her vehicle and drive south on 8th Street, and gave chase. She caught up with the vehicle at 8th Street and Snyder Avenue, and banged on the window, screaming at the suspect that her baby was in the backseat.

The suspect nearly struck the mother with her car as he drove away, police said.

The suspect turned west on Snyder, where the mother lost sight of the SUV.

A witness found the baby, unharmed, in her child seat on the southwest corner of 9th and Emily streets, police said.

The suspect was described by police as a black man with a light complexion, 30-35 years old, thin build and goatee. He was wearing a black jacket, grey hooded sweatshirt and black Nike sneakers.
