Camden County correction officer charged with beating inmate, falsifying report

The officer has been arrested on related charges; bail set at $50,000

A Camden County corrections officer has been charged with beating an inmate while he was handcuffed and subdued, then falsifying a report related to the incident, the Courier-Post reports.

The incident, which was captured on surveillance camera, took place Oct. 27 at the Camden County Department of Corrections.

The officer, John Stinsman, 43, who was a sergeant at the prison at the time, has been charged with official misconduct, aggravated assault and simple assault. He was released from custody after posting a $50,000 bail, the Courier-Post reports.

Video of the incident reportedly shows Stinsman “delivering the blows after the inmate had been handcuffed and subdued, contrary to the incident report he filed,” the prosecutor's office told the Courier-Post.

Investigators added that Stinsman “kicked the inmate multiple times in the torso.”
