Camden man, 22, shot and killed overnight

Police found victim lying on sidewalk near Sixth Street and Ferry Avenue

Camden County police responded early Wednesday morning to the area of Sixth Street and Ferry Avenue, near Camden's I-676 overpass, for a ShotSpotter notification and several 911 calls, according to a spokesman for the Camden County Prosecutor's Office.

Police arrived and found the victim, Stephen Bennett Jr., 22, of Camden, lying on the sidewalk. He was transported to Cooper University Hospital, where he was pronounced dead at 1:44 a.m.

The investigation is ongoing. No arrests have been made. 

Earlier this year, the solve rate for homicides in the city stood at just 19 percent. That has improved to 41.2 percent since, according to the Camden County Prosecutor's Office.

Throughout Camden County there have been 41 homicides in 2015 – 34 in the city of Camden and seven in the suburbs. All of the suburban killings have been solved, and 14 have been solved in the city.

The solve rate in Camden was 54 percent back in 2010. By contrast, Philadelphia has had a solve rate in recent years as high as 71 percent and as low as 58.5 percent. 

The national average for solving homicides in 2013 was 64 percent.
