Cops: Intoxicated driver going wrong way slams into police car

An inebriated motorist driving the wrong way down a South Jersey highway early Saturday morning slammed into a police vehicle head-on, according to authorities.

The Cherry Hill Police Department said the crash occurred on Route 70 near Kingston Drive at 1:38 a.m.

The unidentified driver was behind the wheel of a green 1998 Chevy Malibu that was going east in the westbound lanes of the highway.

A police cruiser was in the westbound lanes driving behind another vehicle that swerved out of the way to avoid the oncoming car.

The officer driving the police car had no way to avoid the Malibu and the cars collided, police said.

Both drivers were taken to Cooper Hospital. The officer was released and the other driver was admitted with non-life threatening injuries.

The wrong-way driver was charged with DUI and issued motor vehicle summonses. Police said additional charges are pending.

Anyone with information on the crash is asked to call Sgt. Glenn Charney at 856-761-4314.
