Researchers believe that the interaction of cosmic ray showers and storm clouds may influence the formation of lightning.

A child from Delaware County was killed by lightning in the Outer Banks section of North Carolina, according to multiple media reports.

WAVY reported that 5-year-old Stephen Little, of Lansdowne, died after being struck while he and his family were getting into their car near Carova Beach Sunday afternoon.

Chief Ralph Melton of the Currituck County Fire EMS told The Philadelphia Inquirer the family was trying to seek shelter from an incoming storm when the incident occurred.

Little was burned and went into cardiac arrest after being struck, according to WAVY. He was pronounced dead after being transported to a hospital in Virginia Beach.
