Don Cheadle hosted the Feb. 16 episode of "Saturday Night Live."

The 44th season of 'Saturday Night Live' is officially past its midway point, and critics aren't impressed.

Seasoned actor Don Cheadle, who hosted the Feb. 16 show, appeared in every sketch of the night, excluding the cold open in an effort to energize the material. But critics are saying lackluster writing may have failed to showcase his or the other cast members' talent.

A sketch called Bar Fight" was a highlight between Cheadle and cast member Beck Bennett that ended with a musical number.

And Cheadle's self-aware monologue was also a highlight, proving to be a little more fine-tuned and traditionally funny than some of the other hosts from this season.

Cheadle also got some recognition on social media during the show for some of his subtle political statements. At one point he wore a "Protect Trans Kids" T-shirt, but never addressed it directly.

The episode's musical guest was blues musician Gary Clark Jr., who played "This Land" from his latest project which will be released Feb. 22.
