Girl Scouts return $100K anti-transgender donation

The donor requested the funds 'not be used to support transgender girls'

A Girl Scout troop in western Washington is making national headlines for its decision to return $100,000 from a donor who required it “not be used to support transgender girls.”

In response, the troop launched an online campaign “For Every Girl” to make up for the monetary loss and take a stand for transgender inclusion. As of Wednesday morning, the troop has received nearly $250,000 in donations in two days.

Girl Scouts of Western Washington CEO Megan Ferland told the Seattle Met that her reason for returning the donation was simple: “Girl Scouts is for every girl and every girl should have the opportunity to be a Girl Scout if she wants to.”

Ferland has been a fervent supporter of transgender girls, including in 2012 when she headed the organization’s Colorado council and issued a public statement welcoming transgender girls after a transgender child was denied from a troop.
