Human skull found beside New Jersey road

This head bone isn’t connected to anything.

Law enforcement officials were combing a wooded area in the Lake Riviera section of Brick Township, New Jersey, on Wednesday in hopes of finding additional remains, Brick Police Sgt. Neal Pederson said.

They searched an area off Old Toms River Road, but nothing new turned up.

A passenger in a vehicle first saw the disembodied skull on March 18. The person called police, who responded along with the Ocean County Prosecutor’s Office, New Jersey State Police, Ocean County Sheriff's Department and the Ocean County Medical Examiner’s Office.

The ME examined the skull for clues, but has determined the skull is human, Al Della Fave, a spokesman for the prosecutor said Wednesday, the day the search expanded.

Old Toms River Road and Arizona Drive is closed between Beaverson Boulevard and Emerald Drive where authorities are on the scene.

State Police forensics expert Donna Fontana is now examining the skull, according to Della Fave.
