Family of 9-year-old Landon Vargas, of East Norriton, announced his passing Sunday

Landon Vargas, the 9-year-old Norristown boy who was blessed by Pope Francis in Philadelphia amid his cancer battle, has died.

Landon Vargas, the 9-year-old East Norriton boy and cancer victim who was blessed by Pope Francis while on his way to Independence Hall in Philadelphia, has died.

Vargas' family announced his passing on a Facebook page dedicated to his medical journey on Sunday.

"It saddens us to have to say this but our precious son Landon, went to live with God Saturday evening. We will miss him dearly but are glad to know he is finally healthy and happy sitting next to our Lord," the family wrote.

According to his loved ones, Vargas was diagnosed with cancer on his 4th birthday and bravely underwent treatment over the past five years with a smile on his face.

"Landon was an intelligent, funny and loving 9 year old that touched many in his short time. He fought valiantly for five years. We don’t know anyone tougher or braver than him."
