An investigation is underway after an armed man was shot by a Camden County police officer during a domestic violence dispute, authorities announced Wednesday.

Camden County Prosecutor Mary Eva Colalillo said the incident occurred about 11:30 a.m. at a residence on the 2700 block of Federal Street.

Responding officers encountered the man, later identified as 38-year-old Jose Antonio Fernandez Ventura, armed with a handgun inside the home with an unidentified female. Ventura allegedly had approached the female subject with the gun when an officer shot him.

It is unclear how many shots were fired, but Ventura and the female victim were injured during the incident. Both were transported to Cooper University Hospital for treatment.

County officials declined to release the identity of the officer, who was placed on administrative leave.

Per New Jersey Attorney General’s Office policy, the shooting will be investigated by the Camden County Prosecutor’s Office.
