Retired firefighter dies after lawnmower catches fire

A former New Jersey firefighter died Sunday in an incident involving a lawnmower, 6ABC reports.

The incident occurred around 1:30 p.m. on Saylors Pond Road in Springfield Township, Burlington County.

Roger N. Lippincot, 79, was riding his lawnmower when it caught fire, according to police. He was killed by the flames and smoke before he could put out the fire, police said.

Lippincot served as a member of the Springfield Township Fire CompanyChief Brian Kokotajlo told NBC10 that Lippincot is the second retired Springfield Township firefighter to die in a fire-related accident in the last two years.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
