Step aside, Chicago, Boston and Dallas.
Fall is here, and as the calendar turns from August to September, then September to October, the epicenter of the sports universe will be here in Philadelphia.
October is the rare month where all of Philly’s four pro sports teams will be on display, with Phillies playoff baseball serving as the appetizer, Eagles games as the entrée and the imminence of Lebron James and the star-studded 76ers as the Baked Alaska of desserts.
Nearly every October evening in Philly promises to offer a cornucopia of the biggest names in sports. Can any other sports-crazed town match the star power about to be unveiled in Philly in the coming weeks and months?
New York has Aaron Judge, Jalen Brunson and Karl Anthony-Towns, a formidable trio for sure, but are there any other Big Apple powerhouses who have the eyes of the nation on them? The Mets will be done by the end of September. The Jets and Giants are in the umpteenth stage of their umpteenth rebuild and there isn’t a NYC-area hockey star with enough gravitas to eclipse Philly’s selection of NFL, MLB and NBA powerhouses.
Los Angeles? The City of Angels won’t be seeing theirs in MLB’s postseason – a tradition unlike any other. There’s Shohei Ohtani and Freddie Freeman from the Dodgers; Matthew Stafford, Puka Nacua and Myles Garrett from the Rams; and Luka Dončić from the Lakers.
L.A. can rival any city in MLB and NFL star power, and Dončić gives the Lakers at least one known superstar, but it’s L.A. Hollywood is supposed to be the home of celebrities and larger-than-life personalities.
Philly? The City of Brotherly Love is supposed to be the home of underdogs and scrappers.
But with a menu of sports juggernauts that includes Joel Embiid, Bryce Harper, Saquon Barkley, Jalen Hurts, Tyrese Maxey, Jaylen Brown, Cris Sanchez, Zack Wheeler, and Jhoan Duran – oh, and did we mention LeBron? – Philly promises to offer top-shelf entertainment on a national, and sometimes global, stage.
Let’s also not forget the Flyers, fresh off their first postseason run in five years, who’ll be showcasing one of the game’s young, upcoming stars in Porter Martone as they attempt to build off last year’s success. They’ll have the barn in South Philly rocking much earlier this season.
With elite talent comes great expectations, with great expectations come prime-time matchups, and with more national visibility than ever comes the opportunity for some wagering fun.
Will Harper or Schwarber homer on any given postseason evening? Will Barkley exceed 100 yards rushing on prime time, and can Hurts hit the over on his TD pass total for the season?

If Philly and L.A. were neck and neck recently for being at the top of the sports food chain, the axis finally titled toward Philly in July, when the Sixers traded with rival Boston for five-time All Star wing Jaylen Brown, an NBA Finals MVP whose addition to a lineup that already included former NBA MVP center Embiid and All-NBA guard Maxey helped persuade perhaps the sport’s all-time leading scorer and perhaps greatest player to come aboard.
LeBron’s decision to first leave L.A. and then sign with the Sixers in search of his fifth ring swung the pendulum Philly’s way. The Sixers will be on prime time this season 34 times, the most allowed for an NBA team in a season, and more than double the number they were scheduled for last season.
For the wagering crowd, LeBron’s addition offers all sorts of fun parlays, futures, props and other betting options that will offer sign-up bonuses.
LeBron will make his Sixers debut Oct. 5 against Brunson and the defending NBA champion Knicks, just one day after the Eagles and Rams will collide at the Linc in South Philly and potentially an NLDS Game 2 involving the Phillies.
Nothing attracts eyes in the fall like sports, and Philly will be at the center of it all.
