South Jersey woman gives birth in pickup truck on way to hospital

A South Jersey couple on Tuesday unexpectedly welcomed a baby girl who was eager to enter the world before she was due, 6ABC reports.

When Keshia Melchoirre went into labor early Tuesday morning, she and her husband Steve quickly got in their truck to head to Virtua Hospital in Voorhees.

"It went from just me breathing hard to screaming in the car," she told 6ABC. "I could feel her coming out."

The couple from Southampton realized that their daughter, Portia, was not going to wait any longer, so Melchoirre delivered the baby in the front of their Ford pickup.

Portia is 4 lbs. 12 oz. to be exact, and three-and-a-half weeks early. When they pulled up to the hospital a medical team rushed out and cut the umbilical cord in the truck.

The mother reportedly went through 10 or 12 hours of hard labor when Portia's big sister, Penelope, was born.
