Drivers will be detoured via Tacony Street and State Road to the I-95 ramp at Milnor Street after the access point at Bridge Street closes Aug. 21.
Highway workers will permanently close a Northeast Philly ramp onto I-95 later this month ahead of construction on a new connector.
The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation said it would shutter the ramp at Bridge Street on Friday, Aug. 21 at 8 p.m. From that time, drivers will be detoured via Tacony Street and State Road to the on-ramp at Milnor Street. They will eventually have a new I-95 access point from Tacony Street and the Delaware Avenue extension, but construction has not yet begun on that ramp, which is expected to open in 2027.
PennDOT said travelers on the detour route should allow extra time for anticipated delays and jams.
This work is a piece of the planned I-95 improvements near the Bridge Street and Betsy Ross Bridge interchanges. The $267.9 million project will reconstruct the viaduct over Bridge and Tacony streets, shift several highway ramps and upgrade traffic signals. While it has been ongoing since 2022, it is not expected to wrap until 2028.
When the Bridge Street ramp closes, PennDOT will also redirect drivers traveling northbound on I-95 to reconstructed southbound lanes through the project limits from 8 p.m. on Aug. 21 to 5 a.m. the following morning. The northbound lanes of the Bridge Street Interchange are due for work next.
This story previously stated the ramp would close Monday, Aug. 24. PennDOT has since shifted the timeline to Friday, Aug. 21.
