Brother of Saint Joseph's DeAndre' Bembry fatally shot in North Carolina

Bembry tweets 'this can't be real'

According to Sports Illustrated, the brother of Saint Joseph’s University NBA draft prospect DeAndre' Bembry was shot and killed in North Carolina on Saturday.

Adrian Potts, 20, was killed outside an apartment building in Charlotte, North Carolina, WSOC-TV reports. St. Joe's coach Phil Martelli told Philly.com he heard the incident was allegedly a dispute over a cellphone. Potts' mother, Essence Bembry, told Martelli her son was not involved in the incident, according to Philly.com.

Potts was a student in North Carolina, and his aunt told WSOC-TV that he was on break from college and was visiting Charlotte when the incident occurred. Three others were also reportedly shot but are expected to survive, according to WSOC-TV.

Philly.com noted that Bembry and Potts both grew up in Charlotte before moving to New Jersey when they were in high school, and according to their mother, the two were very close.

On Saturday, Bembry tweeted the following:

While Bembry, who played three seasons at St. Joe's, is “getting ready for what was going to be a great week in his life and that of his family, the NBA draft will happen now after the worst week in all their lives,” Philly.com said.
