Man allegedly kills brother after boxing match

Police: Anthony McGriff, 50, stabbed John McGriff, 35, after an argument

Philadelphia police charged a Southwest Philadelphia man Monday with murder after he allegedly stabbed his brother to death after watching the welterweight boxing match between Floyd Mayweather and Manny Pacquiao.

Anthony McGriff, 50, of the 5800 block of Christian Street, was charged with murder and possessing an instrument of crime.

Police responded to a call for a person screaming at a home on the 5800 block of Christian Street around 12:37 a.m. Sunday. Upon arriving, a man informed officers that John McGriff, 35, was laying bloody and unconscious in the second floor hallway, police said.

The younger McGriff  was pronounced dead at the scene by medical personnel at 1 a.m.

The Philadelphia Daily News reported that the suspect and victim were brothers who got into an argument about Saturday's boxing match, which featured Mayweather and Pacquiao in a much-anticipated pay-per-view bout.

Neighbors told the newspaper that the two men had spent their entire lives in that same house and were raising their own families there.
