University City District’s West Philadelphia Skills Initiative (WPSI) and PIDC’s Navy Yard Workforce Development Initiatives (NYWDI) have launched a collaborative professional development program to train Philadelphia residents for full-time quality-wage careers with employer partner Philly Shipyard Inc.

Philly Shipyard (formerly Aker Philadelphia Shipyard) is located at the historic Navy Yard and will offer opportunities for graduates to interview for unionized laborer positions starting at $14/hour. Applications are being accepted for the training program through August 20, with the program running September 7 through 24. Interested applicants can visit navyyard.org/workforce/jobs to learn more about the program, training dates, and to submit an application.

WPSI and PIDC are also hosting a virtual information session on Thursday, August 19 at 11 a.m. to provide an overview of the program, recruitment process, expectations for the program, and attendees will meet with the employer partner, Philly Shipyard. Registration is now open.

The Shipyard Laborer Program is a cohort-based training model that will blend virtual courses and in-person sessions that maintain high standards of safety compliance in the face of COVID-19 during training. During the three-week program, participants will earn an OSHA-10 – General Industry Safety Certification, Basic Life Support/CPR certification, and gain exposure to the government and commercial shipbuilding industry.

The program seeks goal-oriented, motivated individuals with a desire to obtain full-time permanent employment in the government and commercial shipbuilding industry. Successful candidates must thrive in a labor-intensive, fast-paced environment that operates in all weather conditions. Attention to detail and a safety-first mindset are a must.
