SEPTA's new Route 45 bus service between Center City and the Navy Yard will begin operating seven days a week on Sunday, Aug. 23.
For the first time in more than a decade, SEPTA will run a daily bus route between Center City and the Navy Yard to fill a longstanding gap in public transit serving the South Philly hub.
The new Route 45 bus made its first trip to the Navy Yard on Tuesday as SEPTA officials touted the benefits of the service. The bus adds to the shuttle operated by the Philadelphia Industrial Development Corp., which manages the 1,200-acre campus.
"The Navy Yard is growing rapidly, and we're committed to expanding transportation options that support the campus's continued evolution," PIDC Executive Vice President Kate McNamara said in a statement. "The launch of Route 45 is another important investment in making the Navy Yard easier to access for the thousands of people who work, live, receive medical care and visit here every day."
From Center City, the Route 45 bus has stops at 12th and Noble and 12th and Market streets. It also has stops in South Philly at 12th and Washington streets, 11th Street and Oregon Avenue, and Broad Street and Oregon Avenue. At the Navy Yard, the bus will make nine stops at the following locations:
• Broad Street & Crescent Drive
• Broad Street & Intrepid Avenue
• Broad Street & Constitution Avenue
• Kitty Hawk Avenue & 11th Street
• Kitty Hawk Avenue & 13th Street
• Kitty Hawk Avenue & League Island Boulevard
• Rouse Boulevard & Normandy Place
• League Island Boulevard & Constitution Avenue
• Normandy Place at Central Green
Service for the full seven-day schedule will begin operating Sunday, Aug. 23.
The Navy Yard is home to more than 150 employers with upwards of 16,000 workers. The formal naval base also opened its first residential development earlier this year, adding hundreds of apartments and extended-stay rentals as part of a long-term plan to transform the campus into a mixed-use neighborhood.
PIDC will continue to operate the weekday shuttle service between Center City and the Navy Yard. One route loops between SEPTA's NRG Station on the Broad Street Line and several points in the Navy Yard. The Center City Express shuttle to the Navy Yard boards on Market Street at 11th, Sixth and Fourth streets.
The extension of Route 45 to the Navy Yard is part of a wider set of changes SEPTA is making to its bus network over the coming year to improve operations and efficiency.
