U.S. Marine from South Jersey dies during basic training exercise at Parris Island

U.S. Marine Recruit Dalton Beals died June 4 direct a basic training exercise at Parris Island in South Carolina. Beals, 19, was a graduate of Pennsville Memorial High School in Salem County, N.J. The circumstances of Beal's death remain under investigation, military officials said.

Police arrest man wanted for allegedly shooting Dunkin' Donuts manager in North Philly

Keith Gibson, 39, has been taken into police custody in Delaware and is believed to be connected to the gunpoint robbery and fatal shooting of Christine Lugo. The 41-year-old manager at Dunkin' Donuts in North Philadelphia was killed June 5 at the store on West Lehigh Avenue.

Temple appoints first Black president in university history

Temple University has hired Dr. Jason Wingard as the next president of the North Philadelphia school, making him the first Black president in the university's 137-year history. Wingard comes to Temple from a range of academic and private sector roles, including time as a dean and professor at Columbia University in New York City.

Rare signers' copy of Declaration of Independence to be sold at Philly auction

A rare William J. Stone engraving of the U.S. Declaration of Independence, produced in 1823, will be auctioned in Philadelphia next month. The document, presented to Charles Carroll in 1824, is one of the last remaining privately held copies of the Stone engraving. It was found at a home in Scotland after it had been missing for 177 years.

Bucks County teen mourned after fatal car crash on prom weekend

Central Bucks East High School student Nicholas Mannino, 18, of Pipersville, was killed early Saturday morning in a car crash after he and his friends attended the school's prom in Warminster. The accident occurred on Ledgedale Road in Greene Township, Pike County.

With Philly Vax Sweepstakes, city residents have chances to win up $50,000 for getting their COVID-19 shots

The Philly Vax Sweepstakes will award cash prizes up to $50,000 to Philadelphia residents who receive the COVID-19 vaccine. Winners will be selected during three drawings on June 21, July 6 and July 19. For each drawing two Philadelphia residents will win $50,000, four will win $5,000 and six more will win $1,000. The total jackpot for this coronavirus vaccination incentive program is $400,000.

Man dies after being punched at fender bender scene in Northeast Philly, police say

Wei Lin, a 28-year-old restaurant worker, suffered fatal injuries from a punch he suffered after offering translation assistance in the aftermath of a fender bender in Northeast Philadelphia, police said. Jose Figueroa, 30, has been charged with involuntary manslaughter and related offenses in the May 24 incident.

Conviction vacated in 2013 Beats headphones murder case because of Philly detective's 'egregious' misconduct

Philadelphia District Attorney Larry Krasner announced Friday that a conviction was vacated in court for a man who was sentenced to life in prison for a 2013 murder. The case, well-known as a deadly attempted robbery over Beats by Dre headphones, was compromised by official misconduct from former Philadelphia detective Philip Nordo, who was fired in 2017 and will be tried this fall on a slew of charges. Arkel Garcia, who was convicted of killing 21-year-old Christian Massey, had the sentence vacated in Common Pleas Court following an investigation by Krasner's office.

George Floyd mural in North Philly vandalized with white nationalist graffiti

Philadelphia police are investigating the vandalism of a mural honoring George Floyd in the Olney section of the city on Friday. Graffiti on the mural showed the name and logo of Patriot Front, a white nationalist organization deemed a hate group by the Anti-Defamation League.
