Dash cam video shows a New Jersey police officer saving a man from jumping off a bridge.
An emotional video captured on a New Jersey police officer’s dash cam shows the intense moment when a man attempting suicide by jumping from the ledge of a bridge is tackled and saved by an officer.
The hero, Riverdale police Sgt. Greg Bogert, based in Morris County, was called to the scene after multiple witnesses reported seeing an unidentified man walking on the ledge of the bridge on Route 287 near Exit 53 at about 11:30 a.m. Monday, NBC4 New York reports.
According to Bogert’s account, and based on what is seen in the dash cam video, he attempts to calm the man from a distance before the man sprints for the ledge and Bogert darts toward him and tackles him just in time.
Bogert told NBC4 New York he did what his job has trained him for, though he added, “It's nice to see when people recognize it." Millions have since watched the video, NBC4 New York reports.
The unidentified man is being treated at a nearby hospital.
NBC4 New York reports police are seeking help in finding the man's family members, who are thought to be somewhere in Pennsylvania.
