Roma is captivating audiences both at the theater and on the television screen.
With the Oscars nominations announcement coming this Tuesday, the London Critics Circle Awards held its event last night in London. “Roma” took home best film, again, after receiving a Critics Choice Award, though it lost to “Cold War” for foreign language film.
"The Favourite" was the most nominated film with 10 nominations. The women received a lot of love. Rachel Weisz won best supporting actress while Olivia Colman took home best actress for “The Favourite.” This is Colman’s first win as best actress. She has previously won two best actress in comedy awards at the Golden Globes and Critics Choice Awards. "The Favourite” also won for for best screenplay, beating out "Roma," and took home the award for best British film.
"First Reformed," which was notably missing from the Golden Globes, also received another win after receiving a Critics Choice Award for best screenplay. Ethan Hawke, who was nominated for best actor at the Critics Choice Awards, won best actor for his performance in "First Reformed," beating out Christian Bale for “Vice." Richard E. Grant won best supporting actor for “Can You Ever Forgive Me?” starring Melissa McCarthy.
Alfonso Cuaron won again for best director for “Roma.” "Face Places," a documentary directed by the legendary 90-year-old French director Agnès Varda won best documentary.
With the Oscar nominations upon us, we have a few predictions for the nominations and even potential wins:
“The Favourite” is bound to receive a healthy dose of Oscar nominations judging by its nominating performance this season. Olivia Coleman may even win for best actress. Christian Bale should receive a best actor nomination, and may even win, for “Vice.” It seems likely that “First Reformed,” though missed by the Golden Globes, will receive an Oscar nomination for best screenplay and best actor for Ethan Hawke as well.
“Roma” will most definitely be nominated for best film, best director and best screenplay, and it seems likely that it will win for best picture. “BlacKkKlansman” should receive best film nomination as well as "First Man," "A Star is Born," "If Beale Street Could Talk," "Green Book," and "Vice."
