The governor of Alabama has banished the Confederate flag from the grounds of the Southern state's Capitol building, local media reported on Wednesday.
Alabama media group's al.com said the flag was removed earlier on Wednesday morning on the order of Governor Robert Bentley. The order came as the appropriateness of the Confederate flag is being debated in state houses in the South, and retailors such as Walmart and Amazon have stopped selling the flag after nine African- American churchgoers were allegedly killed by a white supremacist.
Reuters could not immediately confirm the report.
