American Girl’s new 18-inch doll and accompanying book series depict an African-American girl from Philadelphia.
The doll, named Gabriela McBride, is the brand’s 2017 “Girl of the Year” and will be sold online and at American Girl stores starting on Jan. 1.
The doll was unveiled on “Good Morning America” on Thursday, while the character’s storyline has been released in increments on the American Girl website over a series of days leading up to her launch.
What we know so far is that Gabriela is a dancer and a poet who runs a sandwich shop in the City of Brotherly Love.
"Good Morning America" shared more details Thursday, including that Gabriela is part of a family of artists and that she turns to poetry to help her find her own voice.
The doll comes with a book, several outfits and microphone and headphone accessories.
"Good Morning America" notes that her look is part of American Girl's current focus to depict girls of diverse backgrounds and interests through their brand.
