International House to host Carnival celebration

Can't make it to Rio? Celebrate in Philly

International House Philadelphia will throw a Carnival celebration on Feb. 24. The Carnival in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, will also begin on Feb. 24, with festivities taking place through Feb. 28.

During the late 1800s, street musicians and dancing were introduced to Rio de Janeiro's Carnival, in addition to themed costumes and the tradition of electing the Carnival's "king."

At the Philly celebration, there will be traditional Brazilian and Caribbean cuisine and beverages, Brazilian and Caribbean dance music, samba dance performances by the Greater Philadelphia Caribbean Cultural Organization Masqueraders, drumming performances by One Nation Ensemble and a Brazilian martial art performance.

All guests are encouraged to wear Carnival costumes to the festivities.

Tickets are $10 (International House members receive a discount) and include a tasting of the food and drink.
