Make DIY tacos for Day of the Dead

Lolita prepares taco night for Mexican holiday

Lolita fish tacos Jason Varney/Lolita

Fish tacos at Lolita, 106 S. 13th St.

While every other restaurant is preparing Halloween meals, Marcie Turney and Valerie Safran's Lolita is looking forward to Day of the Dead. Sunday, Nov. 1 and Monday, Nov. 2 they'll host DIY Taco Night with family-style specials for the Mexican holiday which celebrates those who've passed on.

The meal is $35 per person and starts off with a Mexican chopped salad and pumpkin and green chile tamales for the table to share. Then, each person chooses one of five entrees to be served family-style: Yucatan chicken, mole carrots, plantain-crusted mahi, morita chile-braised shortrib or chile-garlic rubbed pork shoulder with pineapple salsa. It all comes together with your typical taco fixings like arroz roja and black beans, corn, salsa, lime crema and corn tortillas. The table shares a tres leches cake for dessert, too, and the whole meal is gluten free.

Make your reservations now to join the Dia de los Muertos celebration. Want to learn more about the holiday? Check out our guide to Mexican culture in Philadelphia, complete with the city's Day of the Dead events.
