The owner of a North Philadelphia funeral home surrendered to police Thursday and was charged with abuse of a corpse and related offenses.

The charges stem from the search of a garage in the 2600 block of West Hagert Street in August when police allegedly found a coffin and two, large, cardboard boxes containing the bodies of deceased individuals. The garage is owned by Janet Powell-Dailey, who also owns Powell Funeral Home, 2400 block of North 27th Street, the Philadelphia police said in a release.

Powell-Dailey allegedly was paid by the families of the deceased individuals to provide funeral services that never were completed, police said. She is also charged with theft and related offenses, police said.

Authorities were alerted to the situation when a resident called the police to report a foul odor emanating from the West Hagert Street garage on Aug. 25.
