The union claims the company's move is a retaliation against Starbucks employees for organizing. The company has claimed it is closing the stores over safety concerns expressed by workers in incident reports.

Philadelphia police are investigating the shooting of a 19-year-old man Thursday afternoon on the subway platform of SEPTA's 15th Street Station in Center City. The victim was shot in the chest, stomach and hand, police said. He was taken to Thomas Jefferson University Hospital and listed in critical condition. No arrests were made and no weapons were recovered at the scene.

Avalon police are investigating the thefts of four high-end cars at the Jersey Shore town on the morning of Tuesday, July 12, authorities said. The vehicles included a Bentley, a Mercedes, a BMW and a Porsche, police chief Jeff Christopher said. Anyone with information about these crimes is asked to contact the Avalon Police Detective Division at (609) 967-5909.

Philadelphia Police have arrested a 14-year-old girl who surrendered to authorities Wednesday morning in last month's deadly beating of James Lambert. The 73-year-old man was attacked on June 24 by a group of young people along the 2100 block of Cecil B. Moore Avenue. Some of the teens struck Lambert repeatedly with an orange traffic cone, police found after reviewing surveillance footage from the scene. Lambert died the day after the attack. A 14-year-old boy also surrendered to police this week to face a charge of third-degree murder.

A record-breaking butterfly ray catch was made June 30 in the Delaware Bay during a nighttime charter trip led by Brossman Boys Bowfishing. Camp Hill, Pennsylvania resident Jeremy Gipe caught a butterfly ray that measured 7 feet, 4-1/8 inches long and weighted 222.54 pounds. That broke a record with the Bowfishing Association of America set in Maryland last year by Nick Sampson.

Philadelphia police are investigating the suspicious death of a 37-year-old man who was found dead in the Delaware River on Wednesday morning. The unidentified man was spotted floating in the water by a passerby in the area of the 3200 block of Buckius Street in the Bridesburg section of Northeast Philadelphia, police said.

The Philadelphia Eagles will have alternate black helmets during the 2022-23 NFL season as they go through a transitional year before bringing back their classic Kelly green look for their alternates the following year. It's possible we'll see these black helmets on Nov. 3 during a "Thursday Night Football" road matchup with the Houston Texans, who revealed this week they'll be wearing their alternate "Battle Red" helmets against Philadelphia.

A property owner doing work on his yard in Wildwood, New Jersey found rolls of cash that were hidden during the Great Depression. The rolls contained $20 and $10 bills that were all from 1934, amounting to about $1,000 in cash. At the time, adjusting for inflation, the cash would have been worth the equivalent of about $21,800.

A team of researchers at the University of Pennsylvania have developed a shapeshifting nanotechnology that can be used to clean teeth and gums without the use of hands. The proof-of-concept device uses iron oxide nanoparticles that can self-assemble in the mouth. They change their form and function based on magnetic fields and catalytic reactions. The device is capable of brushing teeth in a bristle-like form and flossing gums when elongated, with settings that can be customized from person to person.
