University City District’s West Philadelphia Skills Initiative (WPSI) and PIDC’s Navy Yard Skills Initiatives (NYSI) have launched a collaborative professional development program to train Philadelphia residents for quality-wage careers with Tasty Baking Company, one of Philadelphia’s most iconic food companies with over 100 years of history baking iconic Tastykake snack “kakes.”
Tasty will offer opportunities for graduates of the training program to interview for Production Associate positions starting at $14.60/hour. Applications are being accepted for the training program through May 20, with the program running June 6 through 24. Interested applicants can visit navyyard.org/workforce/jobs to learn more about the program, training program dates, and to submit an application.
PIDC is hosting virtual information sessions on Thursday, May 5 and Wednesday, May 11 to provide an overview of the program, recruitment process, and attendees will meet with the employer partner, Tasty. Register to learn more by visiting the Navy Yard website.
The Production Associate Program will be the fifth NYSI program administered by PIDC at the Navy Yard in partnership with WPSI. The Production Associate Program was custom-designed for Tasty Baking Company (now owned by Flowers Foods, Inc.) to connect participants to the tools and support needed to build a meaningful career in the advanced manufacturing food production industry. Located at the Navy Yard, Tasty operates one of the most efficient and technologically advanced manufacturing food production and distribution facilities and has increased demands to manufacture the beloved “kakes.”
The Production Associate role is a part-time position earning $14.60/hour, and Associates can submit a request for extra hours creating a full-time schedule. Typically, Production Associates transition to full-time employment in less than a year and earn $17.00/hour in addition to becoming members of the Bakery, Confectionery, Tobacco Workers, and Grain Millers’ (BCTGM) International Union.
The program seeks goal-oriented, motivated individuals with a desire to obtain full-time permanent employment in the advanced manufacturing food production industry at Tastykake. Submit an application by Friday, May 20 at 5 p.m.
