Progressive Nikil Saval unseats incumbent Sen. Larry Farnese in Pa. Senate's 1st District primary

Challenger Nikil Saval has defeated incumbent State Sen. Larry Farnese in the Democratic primary for Pennsylvania's 1st District senate seat. The district covers parts of Center City, South Philly and North Philly. The Associated Press is projecting Savel, a democratic socialist endorsed by Vermont Sen. Bernie Sanders, will win. Farnese, a lawyer, has held the office since 2009. Saval, a cofounder of the progressive group Reclaim Philadelphia, is a widely published writer and editor with experience at n+1 and contributions to The New York Times and The New Yorker. Saval's campaign is focused on guaranteed affordable housing for all, prison reform, universal expansion of health care, reconstruction of Philadelphia's schools and a Green New Deal for Pennsylvania's economy and environment.

Two adults were killed and eight other people were injured in a car crash in Southwest Philadelphia on Monday, June 1, 2020. A Chevy Tahoe flipped several times and slammed into a Hyundai. Five children were injured in the crash, police said.

Saturday began with began with peaceful protests in Philadelphia with 3,000 demonstrators gathered at the steps of the art museum, seeking justice for George Floyd. By midafternoon, the events took a violent turn resulting in clashes with cops, cars being burned and Center City stores being looted. The city's leaders condemned Saturday afternoon's violence and riots, blaming those destructive events on outsiders who had nothing to do with those seeking justice for Floyd, a black man who died in the custody of Minneapolis police on Monday.
