Chef Michael Solomonov and partner Steven Cook share the magic of modern Israeli food with a wider audience

Just about a month ago, the semifinalists for the 2016 James Beard Foundation Awards, the "Oscars of the food world," were announced. The Philadelphia area was well represented, with plenty of chefs and restaurants getting into the longlist. Now, the finalists for the big medals have been announced and, fittingly, many Philly and local favorites made the list yet again.

Local finalists include:

Outstanding Restaurateur: Stephen Starr, Starr Restaurants

Outstanding Wine, Beer, or Spirits Professional: Sam Calagione, Dogfish Head Craft Brewery

Rising Star Chef of the Year: Alex Bois, High Street on Market

Best Chef, Mid-Atlantic: Eli Kulp, Fork; Rich Landau, Vedge; Greg Vernick, Vernick Food & Drink

Book, Single Subject: "Mastering Pasta: The Art and Practice of Handmade Pasta, Gnocchi, and Risotto," Marc Vetri with David Joachim

Book, International: "Zahav: A World of Israeli Cooking," Michael Solomonov and Steven Cook

Winners will be announced May 2 at the James Beard Awards Gala.
