Cooper University Health Care to expand footprint in Camden with $2 billion project

Cooper University Health Care will undertake a $2 billion expansion in Camden that will include three new clinical care buildings, including one that will start construction next year at the intersection of Dr. Martin Luther King Boulevard and Haddon Avenue, near the Roberts Pavilion. The expansion is the South Jersey health system's first plan for significant growth in more than a decade.

Pennsylvania unveils new driver's license design with enhanced security features

Pennsylvania has unveiled a new driver's license and photo ID design that will include security enhancements similar to those used on high-security documents like banknotes and passports. The new design for licenses and ID cards will be used for both standard and REAL IDs issued at driver and photo centers in the coming months, with a full transition planned at all facilities in mid-November 2022.

Philly bakery owner Emily Riddell named one of Food & Wine's Best New Chefs

Emily Riddell, the owner of South Philadelphia bakery Machine Shop, on the first floor of the Bok Building, has been named one of Food & Wine's Best New Chefs in 2022. Riddell, a veteran in the Philadelphia restaurant industry, started Machine Shop as a wholesale business in 2016 before transitioning into a pop-up bakery during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Croydon man allegedly stole copper wire from decommissioned power plants

Michael Garrison, 43, of Croydon, allegedly broke into decommissioned power plants in the Philadelphia region to steal copper wire and sell it for scrap. He netted $117,000 from the sales, and he also caused more than $1.5 million in damage to at least one shuttered coal-fired plant. The plants impacted include Titus Station in Berks County, Cromby Station in Chester County, Southward Generating Station in Philadelphia and the Gould Street Generating Station in Baltimore.

Eagles fans sue Washington Commanders over railing collapse at FedEx Field

Four Philadelphia Eagles fans who were injured when a guardrail at FedExField collapsed in January have filed a federal lawsuit against the Washington Commanders, security staff and stadium building maintenance contractors. Video of the Jan. 2 incident showed fans crash to the concrete below, within inches of Eagles quarterback Jalen Hurts as he was leaving the field. The lawsuit claims the defendants were negligent and the plaintiffs are each seeking more than $75,000 for ongoing treatment of the injuries they suffered.

Teen fatally shot in Northeast Philly while walking dog with friend, police say

A 17-year-old girl was fatally shot on Horrocks Street in Northeast Philadelphia Sunday night while she was out walking her dog with a friend. The victim was identified as Teryn Johnson. She was shot in the chest and taken to Temple University Hospital, where she was pronounced dead. No arrests have been made and no weapons were recovered at the scene. An investigation remains ongoing.

Wards Pastry, a fixture in Ocean City for 98 years, to close this month

Wards Pastry on Asbury Avenue in Ocean City, New Jersey, will close after 98 years in business. The bakery has been owned by the Hohman family since the 1940s, when current owner Walter Hohman's grandfather purchased the business from the original owner and kept the Wards name. Over the last decade, the business has been well-known for its scrapple pies, which pay homage to the favorite mystery meat of the Pennsylvania Dutch.

Britt Reid, son of former Eagles coach, pleads guilty in drunken crash that seriously injured 5-year-old girl

Britt Reid, the son of former Philadelphia Eagles head coach Andy Reid, has accepted a plea deal in the drunk driving crash that severely injured 5-year-old Ariel Young in the days before the Super Bowl in February 2021. Reid, who was an assistant under his father for the Kansas City Chiefs, slammed into two cars on the side of the road and admitted that he was intoxicated at the time of the crash.

Cold case of Celina Mays, missing South Jersey girl, to be featured on 'In Pursuit with John Walsh'

An episode of 'In Pursuit with John Walsh' will feature the investigation int the disappearance of Celina Mays, a 12-year-old girl who went missing from her Willingboro, New Jersey, home in December 1996. Mays was pregnant at the time. The case has gone unsolved for more than 25 years. The show airs Wednesday Sept. 14 at 9 p.m. EST on Investigation Discovery. It also can streamed on the Discovery+ app.

Father drowns, son rescued at unguarded Ocean City beach

A man died in Ocean City, New Jersey, on Thursday after he and his son had to be rescued from the water neat the 12th Street beach. Shawn Reilly, 56, of Lackawanna County, Pennsylvania had been in the water with his 21-year-old son. Because it is off season, there were no lifeguards stationed at the beach. The son survived and investigators say he had attempted to rescue his father.
